The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
